Dance careers can be difficult to jump-start, so why not listen to some advice from professional dancers?

This past weekend, we had some additions to our usual group of friends, professional dancers. After I got over my initial sense of awe, we began to talk about their dance careers. I’ve always been fascinated with how people rise to the top of their profession. Professional athletes, movie stars and bands, they all have a unique story but there are usually some core similarities. This article outlines the basic things you should do to start your career in dance to become a professional dancer. Now, you’ll need a little bit of luck, good timing and connections as well, but you could get all of that while getting a Big Mac at your local McDonalds. Natural talent is a good base, but it won’t take you to the top. You need to nurture that talent, develop it and present it to the right people. This article shows you the basics. Some are more obvious than others. Most of you just need some reassurance that you’re taking the right steps to reach your goal, while others have no idea where to start. I believe that not all people in the “know” have the level of talent they need, and not all people with talent are in the “know”. I want to change that, so let’s start!




1. People do not become professionals in anything by reading a few articles or practicing a few hours a week. They become students of their profession. Students go to school. This goes for professional dancers as well. Now, there are a select few that push themselves on their own and have developed a wonderful ability, but that is still not enough. Their talent is rough and unrefined. Regardless of how many years you’ve practiced in your basement, everyone needs some formal training. Nothing can replace a veteran dancer showing you right from wrong, critiquing you and encouraging you. Start by going to a dance studio. Obviously, the sooner you do this the better. You’ll rack up experience and the younger you are the more receptive you are to learning. A good rule of thumb is the bigger the dance studio the better the dance professionals. However, a good teacher has experience, but also a connection with their pupil. This relationship can be forged at smaller, local dance studios as well. Remember, this is just the beginning. There are many professionals that reminisce about a grade school teacher that influenced them the most. Of course, it was probably some Julliard professor that trained them the most, but the person who taught them passion and desire is usually someone they met earlier in their dance career.

2. Dance camps and other supplemental dance institutions are a great way to increase your exposure to various aspects of the dance industry. You will network, learn techniques and be exposed to different teachers and performances. Going outside your comfort zone is a great way to build independence, character and a sense of responsibility as a dancer.

3. When you graduate high school, you’ll be looking to go on to college. This decision should be well thought out. You’re going to trust them with your education that will play a significant role in life after college. As an aspiring, professional dancer, you will want to attend the most prestigious dance school you can find. Try to find an accredited dance school, but at the very least any dance school is better than none. Make sure you start planning before it’s time to apply, like well before. You should begin your research about dance schools while you’re still in high school. Find out what requirements they are looking for in a dancer. Do whatever you can to better your chances at being accepted.

By the end of your formal training, you should, if you haven’t already, be narrowing down your dance techniques to a few select, specialized styles. You need to seek out the best dance teacher(s) you can find in those styles and train—train—train. Like any profession, it’s all about education, and for a professional dancer, you never stop learning and practicing. Once again, if you are serious and want to advance in your dance career, at this point you need an expert, a real professional dance teacher.

4. The next tip is something that I’ve written about before. You need good head and body shots, and for that you need a good photographer. Refer to my article, “4 Tips for Great Actor Headshots”, on Talent Trove for more information about what you need for a good portfolio. Yes, it’s about actor headshots, but there are some valid and transferable tips for dancers as well. The important thing to remember for your body shots as a dancer is that you should take pictures of yourself in various dancewears. Don’t wear flashy jewelry, use lighting or shadows to create illusions, or distract the observer with a complex or interesting background. You should be the focus and the subject of interest, nothing else. Good photographs can really help you further you dance career by grabbing the attention of those who should be watching you.

5. At this point, you should already have been to minor dance auditions and castings, just to get your feet wet and some sort of experience, however, now you are ready for some serious work…and it is work. Don’t ever forget that this is your job, your profession. This new level of dance might come as a shock or seem like foreign territory, but you must believe that you are good enough to be here. You are good enough to be here. This is a higher standard. It will be different. It will be difficult, but that is what makes it so much greater when you succeed. You’ve come this far. This is what you’ve been training for, and others have found potential in you, enough to accept and train you. You belong here. The more of these auditions and casting calls you attend, the more comfortable you will become.

6. Those networking and people skills you picked up during your days at dance camp and college will now come into play. You’re in the deep end of the pool now, playing with the big kids. Time to mingle and make new friends. You have to start talking to those professional dancers you see walking the studio halls during your dance auditions. Talk to other dancers who are auditioning. Talk to the judges, casting directors, agents, anyone that will talk to you. Ask them questions, pick their brain, and learn from their stories. Even if they don’t answer your questions, their behavior, demeanor, and way of conversing with you will teach you something. The best thing you can do is become friends with someone successful.

7. You should be fairly comfortable with auditioning by now, and ready to start searching for a dance agent or a dance agency. You will most likely have to perform a dance routine for them in order to be accepted, however, once you’re in you will be given opportunities that you otherwise wouldn’t know existed. These dance agents and dance agencies get the scoop on dance auditions and casting calls so try your best to get represented by one. Once you are in, your dance career will be given wings. However, this is no time to take it easy and coast on through. Now is the time to step it up.

8. Back to what I mentioned before, “…you never stop learning and practicing.” Well, it’s time to train—train—train. Practice makes perfect, I know you’ve heard that before. This intense training period isn’t about learning new styles as it might have been about before. This dance training will focus on honing your existing skills and techniques down to a sharp, crisp point. You need to be awesome in what you do, not mediocre in a broad range of areas. A professional dancer needs to be at the top of their specific field, not hovering in the middle across the board. You’ll have plenty of time later to expand your horizons, but for now you need a job so you can gain valuable experience…and money. Also, stop and take a breath. Look around, you’re becoming a dancer, and your dance career is beginning to take shape. Enjoy it!

9. When you think you’re ready, and don’t wait to long at this point, start researching some choreographers you would like to work with or train with as a pupil. Most dance choreographers will offer dance classes at their own dance studios. You have to wait this long before you attempt to train with a professional dance choreographer, because they are just that, professionals. Dance choreographers will only work with the best dancers so you have to be at a certain point of your dance career for them to take interest in you. There are many benefits to working with a dance choreographer. You become familiar with the way this aspect of the dance industry works. They will begin to recognize you and perhaps throw some work your way. You will also be updated and trained in the most current dance techniques and trends. The fewer things that surprise you during a dance audition the better.

10. At the end of all this there is one important thing to remember, that usually separates those that make it and those that do not. If this is truly what you want, and you’ve dreamt about it all your life, never give up trying. Every successful person in the world has one thing in common. They were relentless in their pursuit of happiness. If you want to make the most out of your dance career, it will take a lot of hard work so don’t get discouraged. You’ll get rejected. Everyone does. Being a dancer is not easy for anyone, but people do it. Why not you?

These tips are not set in stone or by any means in exact order. Everyone is different and some people might jump ahead or start one step later in their career. The important thing is that you have a clear plan with goals, and you work hard to achieve them.

Secara default, biasanya ini sangat pendek, sehingga PC akan menjadi responsif, tapi terkadang hal ini berarti Windows akan membuat waktu untuk berpindah di antara proses-proses tersebut.

Solusinya? Anda bisa mencoba apa yang Windows Server lakukan. Atur sistem untuk menggunakan quantem yang lebih lama. Atur "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl\Win32PrioritySepartion" menjadi 16 (hex).

Quantum yang lebih lama berarti pergantian yang lebih sedikit di antara program jadi lebih sedikit waktu yang terbuang. Anda bisa memperhatikan kalau lag pada game atau pemutaran video akan menjadi lebih halus. Tapi, jika Anda menemukan masalah lainnya, cukup kembalikan nilai Win32PrioritySeparation menjadi nilai orisinilnya yaitu 26.

20. Non-aktifkan AutoRun

Fitur AutoRun milik Windows merupakan salah satu risiko keamanan yang berpotensi karena ia menjalankan kode secara otomatis ketika Anda menyambungkan alat yang bersifat removable ke dalam PC. Jika memang, hal tersebut bisa diatur secara manual saja, maka akan lebih aman untuk mematikan fitur tersebut.

Pada beberapa sistem, hal tersebut hanya bisa dilakukan melalui Registry. Masuklah ke "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping" dan buat tombol yang bernama "Autorun.inf".

Kemudian, klik-ganda pada nilai defaultnya dan masukkan "@SYS:DoesNotExist". Kemudian hapus "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2". Sekarang, Windows tidak lagi menjalankan kode apapun pada CD, DVD, atau portable drive secara otomatis. Anda harus menjalankannya secara manual.

7. Enkripsi dengan Mudah

Akses folder dengan cepat dengan memunculkannya pada Start Menu, Ketik “REGEDIT” pada “Run”, masuk ke “HKCR\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers“, klik-kanan “ContextMenuHandlers” dan klik “New | Key”.

Ketik ” dan tekan [Enter]. Sekarang, tahan [Shift], klik-kanan pada sebuah folder, dan pilih “Pin to Start Menu“.

9. Percepat Waktu Peng-Kopian

12. Multiple Live Messenger Log-In

Biasanya, Windows Live Messenger (WLM) hanya memungkinkan Anda untuk masuk ke dalam satu akun saja pada satu waktu tertentu. 13. Bersihkan Menu-Menu

Anda telah meng-unsinstall sebuah aplikasi, tapi ia malah meninggalkan Anda sebuah cinderamata berupa ikon-ikon yang tidak berguna. Untuk memperbaiki ini, masuk ke “HKCR\*” dan “HKCR\Directory“. Perlebar panelnya, kemudian pilih “shellex\ContextMenuHandlers” dan lihat berbagai tombol di bawahnya yang berhubungan dengan perintah yang tidak Anda inginkan.

Pada PC, fungsi “HKCR\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\7-Zip” berhubungangan dengan menu konteks 7-Zip, sebagai contohnya, untuk menghapusnya, klik “Delete” pada bagian kiri panel. Tapi hati-hati, sebaiknya Anda hanya menghapus jika sudah 100% yakin pada menu yang tepat.

Masuk ke “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies“, buatlah sebuah nilai DWORD yang disebut “WriteProtect” dan atur pada nilai “1“. Anda akan bisa membaca drive USB, tetapi tidak bisa memindahkan data ke dalamnya lagi.

2. Kendalikan UAC

Kendali Akun Pengguna milik Vista sangat sering memunculkan peringatan-peringatan yang akhirnya dimatikan oleh para pengguna. Tapi, kadang justru membuat mereka kelewatan fitur-fitur yang bermanfaat seperti mode perlindungan untuk IE. 3. Ubah Pemilik

Instalasikan Windows pada PC dan Anda pasti akan diminta untuk memasukan nama, yang kemudian akan disimpan sebagai pemilik yang terdaftar (jalankan WinVer untuk melihat ini pada sistem Anda). Jika Anda membeli sebuah komputer bekas, mungkin Anda ingin mengganti nama pemiliknya dengan nama sendiri. Hmm..tak ada cara lain selain dengan Registry.

Mengurutkan nama file pada Explorer bisa menjadi suatu masalah. Pengaturan awal, ia akan menempatkan “File_v2.txt” sebelum “File_v15.txt”, dan itu bukanlah urutan ASCII, tetapi terlihat lebih masuk akal. Tetapi, bagaimana jika “v” merujuk kepada nomor versi, dan seharusnya “File_v15.txt” di urutan terdahulu? Pada saat ini, sistem awal Explorer tidak bisa bekerja sama sekali.

Untuk mengembalikan pengurutan berdasarkan ASCII yang biasa, masuk ke “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer“, buatlah nilai DWORD yang disebut “NoStrCmpLogical” dan atur nilainya menjadi “1“. Hapus kode tersebut jika ingin kembali ke kondisi awal Explorer yang standar.

A content management system (CMS) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text

CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures.

There are three main categories of CMS, with their respective domain of use:

1. Enterprise CMS

Enterprise content management (ECM) is the strategies, methods and tools used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organizational processes. ECM tools and strategies allow the management of an

2 Web CMS

A web content management system (WCMS or Web CMS) is content management system (CMS) software, usually implemented as a Web application, for creating and managing HTML content. A WCMS facilitates content creation, content control, editing, and many essential Web maintenance functions.

Each component has its own lifecycle (owner, version, approval, use) and can be tracked individually or as part of an assembly. CCM is typically used for multi-channel customer-facing content (marketing, usage, learning, support). CCM can be a separate system or be a functionality of another content management system type (e.g., ECM or Web Content Management).

Partai Demokrat Menang di Semua Quick Count

Setelah 4 jam berlalu dari batas penutupan pencontrengan, hasil hitung cepat di semua lembaga survei menempatkan Partai Demokrat sebagai jawara sementara. Perolehan persentase partai ini cukup jauh meningalkan pesaingnya, PDIP dan Golkar.

Pantauan detikcom di Lembaga Survei Indonesia (LSI) pada pukul 16.20 WIB, Kamis (9/4/2009), PD memperoleh 19,9 persen disusul PDIP 15,7 persen dan Golkar 13,7 persen. Partai menengah ditempati PKS dengan persentase 7,5 persen dan PKB 6,2 persen.

Lingkaran Survei Indonesia (LSI) untuk sementara juga menempatkan PD di urutan pertama dengan perolehan persentase 20,32 persen. Urutan kedua disusul PDIP dengan 15,33 persen dan Golkar 15,13 persen. Urutan keempat adalah PKS dengan 8,28 persen dan PAN dengan 6,37 persen.

Lembaga Survei Nasional (LSN) juga menempatkan PD sebagai juara. Di lembaga ini PD mendapatkan 24,8 persen disusul Golkar 15,36 persen, PDIP 9,64 persen, PKS 9,46 persen dan PPP 6,77 persen.

Lembaga survei Cirus juga menempatkan Partai Demokrat sebagai pemenang sementara hitung cepat ini. PD mendapatkan 12,2 persen disusul PDIP dengan 10,12 persen, Golkar 9,15 persen, PKS 4,25 persen dan PAN 3,7 persen.

Sementara hasil hitung cepat dari LP3ES juga menempatkan PD menempati urutan pertama dengan 18,7 persen disusul PDIP dengan 15,5 persen. Sementara Golkar hanya mendapatkan 15 persen disusul PKS 7,6 persen dan PAN 5,9 persen.

Hasil ini akan terus berubah seiring dengan masuknya data-data baru yang selesai dihitung di tiap TPS yang menjadi sampel hitung cepat. Hasil ini tidak menunjukkan perolehan asli partai.

The Battle of the Browsers – The History and the Future of Internet Browsers

With Internet Explorer 8 now available, can Microsoft hope to retain market dominance over fierce open source rivals such as Mozilla's Firefox or the feature packed Opera web browser. Can history give us a clue to what the future of web browsers/browsing might hold? How did Netscape Navigator go from having a dominant 89.36% market share of all web browsers in 1996 and yet only 3.76% by mid 1999?

Let us take a journey that will begin long before even the intellectual conception of Internet Explorer, that will glance at its long defeated rivals, examine the current browsers available and will end with a prediction of what the future of browsing will offer us – and which browser(s) will still be around to offer it.

People often think that Internet Explorer has been the dominant web browser since the golden age of the internet began. Well for a very long time now it has indeed been the most popular browser and at times been almost totally unrivalled. This was mainly a result of it being packaged free with Microsoft Windows, in what some would later call a brutal monopolisation attempt by Microsoft. The last few years however have heralded the arrival of new, possibly superior browsers. Mozilla's Firefox has been particularly successful at chipping away at Explorers market dominance. So where did it all begin, and why were Microsoft ever allowed to have a hundred percent market dominance?



Origins

The truth is they never did have total dominance, but at times they have come very close. Microsoft actually entered the Browser Battle quite late on. Infact a man named Neil Larson is credited to be one of the originators of internet browsers, when in 1977 he created a program – The TRS-80 - that allowed browsing between “sites” via hypertext jumps. This was a DOS program and the basis of much to come. Slowly other browsers powered by DOS and inspired by the TRS 80 were developed. Unfortunately they were often constricted by the limitations of the still fairly young internet itself.

In 1988, Peter Scott and Earle Fogel created a simple, fast browser called Hytelnet, which by 1990 offered users instant logon and access to the online catalogues of over five thousand libraries around the world – an exhilarating taste of what the internet, and web browsers, would soon be able to offer.

In 1989 the original World Wide Web was born. Using a NeXTcube computer, Tim Berners-Lee created a web browser that would change how people used the internet forever. He called his browser the WorldWideWeb(http://www., which is still likely to sound familiar to internet users today. It was a windowed browser capable of displaying simple style sheet, capable of editing sites and able to download and open any file type supported by the NeXTcube.

In 1993 the first popular graphical browser was released. Its name was Mosaic and it was created by Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina. Mosaic could be run on both Unix, and very importantly, on the highly popular Microsoft Windows operating system (incidentally it could also be used on Amiga and Apple computers). It was the first browser on Windows that could display graphics/pictures on a page where there was also textual content. It is often cited as being responsible for triggering the internet boom due to it making the internet bearable for the masses. (It should be noted that the web browser Cello was the first browser to be used on Windows – but it was non graphical and made very little impact compared to Mosaic).

The Browser Wars - Netscape Navigator versus Internet Explorer

Mosaic's decline began almost as soon as Netscape Navigator was released (1994). Netscape Navigator was a browser created by Marc Andreessen, one of the men behind Mosaic and co-founder of Netscape Communications Corporation. Netscape was unrivalled in terms of features and usability at the time. For example, one major change from previous browsers was that it allowed surfers to see parts of a website before the whole site was downloaded. This meant that people did not have to wait for minutes simply to see if the site they were loading was the actual one the were after, whilst also allowing them to read information on the site as the rest of it downloaded. By 1996 Netscape had almost 90% market dominance, as shown below.

In these two years Netscape clearly dominated the internet browser market, but a new browser named Internet Explorer was quickly gaining ground on it.

Microsoft released their own browser (ironically based on the earlier Mosaic browser which was created by one of the men now running Netscape), clearly worried about Netscape's dominance. It was not so much the worry that it would have a 100% market share of internet browsers on their Windows operating system, but more the worry that browsers would soon be capable of running all types programs on them. That would mean foregoing the need for an actual operating system, or at the most only a very basic one would be needed. This in turn would mean Netscape would soon be able to dictate terms to Microsoft, and Microsoft were not going to let that happen easily. Thus in August 1995, Internet Explorer was released.

By 1999 Internet explorer had captured an 89.03% market share, whilst Netscape was down to 10.47%. How could Internet Explorer make this much ground in just two years? Well this was down to two things really. The first, and by far the most important was that Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer in with every new copy of Windows, and as Windows was used by about 90% of the computer using population it clearly gave them a huge advantage. Internet Explorer had one other ace it held over Netscape – it was much better. Netscape Navigator was stagnant and had been for some time. The only new features it ever seemed to introduce were often perceived by the public as beneficial for Netscape's parent company rather than Netscape's user base. (i.e., features that would help it monopolise the market). Explorer, on the other hand, was given much attention by Microsoft. Regular updates and excellent usability plus a hundred million dollar investment would prove too much for Netscape Explorer.

2000 – 2005

These years were fairly quiet in the Battle of the Browsers. It seemed as if Internet Explorer had won the war and that nobody could even hope to compete with it. In 2002/2003 it had attained about 95% of the market share – about the time of IE 5/6. With over 1000 people working on it and millions of dollars being poured in, few people had the resources to compete. Then again, who wanted to compete? It was clearly a volatile market, and besides that everybody was content with Internet Explorer. Or were they? Some people saw faults with IE – security issues, incompatibility issues or simply bad programming. Not only that, it was being shoved down peoples throats. There was almost no competition to keep it in line or to turn to as an alternative. Something had to change. The only people with the ability and the power to compete with Microsoft took matters into their own hands.

Netscape was now supported by AOL. A few years prior, just after they had lost the Browser Wars to Microsoft, they had released the coding for Netscape into the public domain. This meant anybody could develop their own browser using the Netscape skeleton. And people did. Epiphany, Galeon and Camino, amongst others, were born out of Netscape's ashes. However the two most popular newcomers were called Mozilla and Firefox.

Mozilla was originally an open sourced project aimed to improve the Netscape browser. Eventually it was released as Netscape Navigator 7 and then 8. Later it was released as Mozilla 1.0.

Mozilla was almost an early version on another open source browser, Firefox. With it being an open source the public were able to contribute to it - adding in what features it needed, the programming it required and the support it deserved. The problems people saw in Internet Explorer were being fixed by members of the open sourced browser community via Firefox. For instance, the many security issues IE 6 had were almost entirely fixed in the very first release of Firefox. Microsoft had another fight on their hands.

2005 – Present

Firefox was the browser that grew and grew in these years. Every year capturing an even larger market share percentage than before. More user friendly than most of its rivals along with high security levels and arguably more intelligent programming helped its popularity. With such a large programming community behind it, updates have always been regular and add on programs/features are often released. It prides itself on being the peoples browser. It currently has a 28.38% market share.

Apple computers have had their own browser since the mid 1990's – Safari - complete with its own problems, such as (until recently) the inability to run Java scripts. However most Apple users seemed happy with it and a version capable of running on Windows has been released. It has had no major competitor on Apple Macs, and as such has largely been out of the Browser Wars. It currently holds a 2.54% market share and is slowly increasing.

Internet Explorer's market share has dropped from over 90% to around 75%, and is falling. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft will attempt to regain such a high market share.

Opera currently holds 1.07%.

Mozilla itself only has a 0.6% market share these days.

The Future of Web Browsing

Web browsers come and go. It is the nature of technology (if such a term can be used), to supplant inferior software in very short periods of time. It is almost impossible for a single company to stay ahead of the competition for long. Microsoft have the advantage of being able to release IE with any Windows using PC. That covers over 90% of the market. They also have the advantage of unprecedented resources. They can compete how they wish for as long as they wish. So there is no counting IE out of the future of web browsing.

Safari is in a similar position, being easily the most popular Mac web browser. Its long term survival is dependant upon Apple and the sale of their computers.

These are the only two browsers that are almost guaranteed another five years of life, at least. Firefox may seem like another candidate, but the public is fickle, and one bad release, or if it seriously lags behind the new Internet Explorer 8 for long, could easily see its popularity quickly descend into virtual oblivion.

However, it seems likely community driven browsers, such as Mozilla and Firefox, will be the only types of browser capable of competing with the wealthy internet arm of Microsoft in the near future.

As for web browsing itself, will it change any time soon? Well it already has for some online communities. Peneliti dari Massachusetts Institute of Technology telah melatih sebuah virus kecil untuk melakukan perintah para peneliti, Kamis (02/4) kemarin, yang diyakini bahwa virus tersebut dapat membuat baterai lithium lebih powerful dan efisien. Virus tersebut diubah menjadi dua gen oleh peneliti, yang diberi nama virus MI3, dan apat melakukan dua hal yakni membangun kerangka yang dibuat dari besi fosfat, dan kemudian memasukkan ke sebuah karbon nanotube untuk membuat elektroda kecil dan powerful.

Menurut Angela Belcher, pemimpin peneliti dari institute yang sama, elektroda memang dapat membuat memory sebuah device lebih powerful, seperti yang ada dalam MP3 player atau handphone, dan lebih ramah lingkungan daripada teknologi baterai biasanya. “User dapat menggunakan iPod sekitar 3 jam lebih lama dibandingkan baterai iPod biasa. Kami juga membuat skala besar untuk mobil. Semua itu karena dalam baterai terdapat virus yang mempu menambah power performance baterai, lebih baik daripada baterai biasa.” kata Belcher.

During these tough and uncertain economic times, marriages are being tested at an all-time high! People are losing jobs or afraid they might lose their job any day! Income is lower than it's been in a long time for most of the country. Companies are laying off people in record numbers. Many marriages are taking a beating due to the stress associated with all this! I work a lot with married couples in the areas of building communication skills and resolving conflicts. Married couples that learn how to communicate during these tough times has never been more important. Some married couples are dealing with feelings of fear and/or inadequacy; some are trying to figure out if they will make it in this home or do they need to sell and downsize until things get better. Here are 5 steps to take to help overcome conflict during these economic struggles.

1. Date Night - (the cheap version) - plan a regular date night. For us it's Thursday nights. Going on a date may seem like you're going the opposite direction when you should be saving money. On the contrary, building a date night into your life is a great way to increase the quality of your relationship. You don't have to spend more money to do it either! In fact, part of the fun might be planning an outing that costs no more then eating at home. Go to a local park instead of a restaurant, take a picnic lunch, chill out together, and just be together. Remember when you were dating? It didn't matter what you did as long as you were together. Also, we all need a way to bring the relationship back together. Life creates distance the moment one person goes off to work. Each of you has different things on our minds; possibly different problems you are trying to solve or navigate through. Being intentional about being together helps bring you back to the oneness you used to experience. If there are children in the picture, find another family that would love a trade off in taking care of each other's children. That's free! (maybe a little crazy, but free) Regardless of the when, where, and how, make the time to be together to keep your marriage growing!

2. Increase the lines of communication between you and your spouse

This is a great time to begin communicating more than usual. Not just small talk, but this is a time to start talking about the matters of your heart. It would be great to provide a safe place for each of you to talk about how this economic situation has affected you individually. A while back, I found a little box with questions inside called a "Chat Pack." I started giving these to clients to take home with them to ask each other when they were on a date. The response was overwhelming! As wild as it sounds, the "Chat Pack" has proven to be successful in helping couples reconnect and rejuvenate their marriage! I use the frequently with couples now, when I counsel.

3. Husbands validate your wife's feelings!

This is not a time to take how your partner's feeling during this time personally. But, rather to listen to the heart of your partner without offering suggestions, fix-it tips, or telling them not to worry. It is a time to move toward them as if what they are experiencing the most important thing to you in the world. Though their concerns may threaten you or make you feel inadequate, learn to listen without interruption. For example, if a woman expresses to her husband that she's uncertain and fearful about what will happen you can:

a. Tell her it's ridiculous to feel that way, which usually diminishes the importance of her concerns and she probably hears that you don't care about what's important to her and that her fears are stupid.

b. Tell her not to worry about it; everything's going to be OK, which again doesn't address her fears; it probably tells her that you think her fears are not worth feeling.

c. You can get angry because it questions your ability to provide and protect your wife…which will push her further away and she will probably emotionally distance herself from you.

d. You can say, "Tell me more about how you feel!" You can tell her, "I have some ideas, but I'm curious what would help you feel secure during these times." This tells her that her concerns, and in fact she, is important to you and you care about her deeply. Chances are this will calm her fears because she knows you are in this together.

4. Women, validate your husband's feelings, too! Men are generally taught not to express their feelings. They are taught that emotions are a sign of weakness. Hiding your emotions may help you close a deal, but it is counterproductive when trying to build an intimate, authentic relationship! Some women can't really handle their man being vulnerable. Men can usually sense that. Most men will do just about anything to avoid being criticized or shut down. So, women, listen to your man and provide a safe place for him to talk about his emotions. If you can't handle being with a man who has some fears, you may need to go to mars to find one without fears…we all have fears and most of us spend a lifetime making sure no one knows!

5. Lastly, confess your faults and forgive each other every time there have been hurtful words between you. Too many people avoid conflicts. Usually, when couples tell me they resolve conflicts, I find out that they actually just stop conflicts; they don't resolve them. In my opinion, a conflict isn't resolved until both partners have confessed their part in the issue and asked for forgiveness. One may apologize for saying hurtful words and the other may need to say "I'm sorry" for having hurtful thoughts! Saying I'm sorry is great, but it does not complete the resolution process and put the issue to rest. I've seen many couples that stop with one of them saying "I'm sorry" and the other either being quiet, saying, "thanks," or saying, "you don't have to apologize for that." That's not resolved! It takes true humility and brokenness (the good kind) to both ask for and give forgiveness, but it's critical. I guarantee you that when partners finally forgive each other, there's a healing balm in the relationship. I always ask them how it feels after they went the extra mile and forgave each other and they always say that it feels better than just apologizing. There is usually a twinkle in their eye and peace in their heart. But, it takes two people that are willing to get over their self-righteousness, their pride, and their arrogance for it to work. But it's so worth it!

It is my prayer that God will use this "economic crisis" to both draw us to each other in building stronger marriages and to Himself as we realize that only He is our only true Provider...
