Ubuntu will target cloud computing in October

February 23, 2009 (IDG News Service) Support for cloud computing will be a major feature of the October release of Ubuntu, the Linux distribution maintained by Canonical Ltd., announced company CEO Mark Shuttleworth in an e-mail to the Ubuntu developers mailing list on Friday.

The server version of Ubuntu 9.10, nicknamed "Karmic Koala," will include support for EC2, the cloud computing service run by Amazon Web Services, and a portfolio of standard Amazon Machine Images (AMI) to make it easier for applications running in the cloud to collaborate with one another by using similar configurations, Shuttleworth wrote.

Amazon.com Inc.'s EC2 also supports Windows Server 2003, OpenSolaris and a number of other Linux distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Oracle Enterprise Linux.

Microsoft Corp. plans its own hosted cloud-computing service, Azure, set to open for business later this year. Ubuntu, though, could make the market much tougher for Microsoft by helping other competitors to spring up or letting businesses do it themselves.

Beyond support for Amazon's EC2, Kosmic Koala will incorporate Eucalyptus, an open-source tool allowing enterprises to create EC2-style computing clouds in their own data centers. It will also offer better management of data center energy consumption, allowing server instances to sleep when there is no work to be done. They will be able to quickly resume operations when workload increases, dynamically changing resource installations according to need, Shuttleworth wrote.

Canonical releases two updates to Ubuntu each year, in April and October, each with alliterative animal nicknames. Version 8.10, "Intrepid Ibex," released in October 2008, focused on simplifying the configuration of Internet connections and improving the user interface, especially for netbooks. The goal for "Jaunty Jackalope," scheduled for release in April as Ubuntu 9.04, is to shorten boot times to 25 seconds on a netbook and blur the line between desktop and Web-hosted applications.

Koala will also feature desktop innovations: Shuttleworth wants to make it boot even faster than Jaunty on a netbook and to make the boot and log-in screens more attractive. There will also be a new Netbook Edition of Ubuntu, designed to install on a greater variety of hardware and with the graphical user interface tuned for small screens, he said.

Before the coding begins in earnest, developers will be able to contribute to the software's design at the next Ubuntu Developer Summit in Barcelona, Spain, from May 25 to 29.

Microsoft renews Vista anticrack campaign

February 25, 2009 (Computerworld) Starting this week, Microsoft Corp. will feed Windows Vista Ultimate users an update that sniffs out pirated copies, a company manager said yesterday.

The update, which will hit some Vista Ultimate systems via Windows Update this week, and others in the weeks to come, is the newest move in an anti-activation crack campaign Microsoft launched almost exactly a year ago.

Such cracks evade Vista's built-in counterfeit-detection technology by sidestepping product activation, essentially duping the operating system into thinking it's legitimate.

The newest update targets "SoftMod," an activation hack that tricks Vista into thinking it's being booted on a PC that had the operating system installed -- and activated -- at the factory. Typically, computer makers pre-activate Windows before they ship systems, eliminating the chore for customers.

SoftMod can be used to created a bootable CD, which then must be used each time the PC is booted, or with care, it can be installed on the machine's hard drive.

According to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft senior product manager in the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) group, the SoftMod detection update will be offered only to Vista Ultimate users. "We're releasing this update to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition only at this time and only to systems with English as their primary language," Kochis said in an entry to the WGA blog.

Kochis did not say why Microsoft was sending the update only to Vista Ultimate PCs, although the move may have something to do with that edition's popularity among pirates. Vista Ultimate is the most expensive and most feature-packed version of the operating system and is the dominant edition on file-sharing sites that traffic in illegal software.

Last year, Microsoft delivered two activation crack updates to all Vista users as a preliminary step before it launched Service Pack 1 (SP1). Those updates fingered "Grace Timer" and "OEM BIOS," but only notified the user of their presence and offered a solution. SP1, which was released to the general public several weeks later, also detected the two cracks. If a hacked copy of Vista was upgraded to SP1, Windows would immediately start spewing on-screen messages that the copy is counterfeit.

After receiving the newest update, copies of Vista Ultimate hacked using SoftMod will pop up a warning that reads, "Windows has found software that circumvents Windows activation and interferes with its normal operation. The presence of such software may indicate that your copy of Windows is counterfeit."

The pop-up also includes a link to instructions on how to remove the crack. People not using SoftMod will not see the pop-up.

Menggunakan BCDEDIT

Setelah menginstall Windows 7 sebagai sistem operasi kedua setelah Windows XP maupun Windows Vista pada akhirnya akan menemukan adanya pilihan apakah akan membooting komputer dengan Windows 7 atau versi Windows sebelumnya. Pada mode dual boot yang dihasilkan setelah instalasi Windows 7, secara default komputer akan booting dengan Windows 7 apabila dalam waktu 30 detik kita tidak melakukan pilihan Windows mana yang akan dijalankan. Bagi saya atau sebagian dari Anda yang mempunyai kebiasaan menyalakan PC kemudian pergi, bisa jadi harus merestart kembali karena seharusnya masuk ke Windows XP, bukan Windows 7. Untuk mengubah default atau delay waktu tersebut, terdapat tool dari Windows yang dapat digunakan yaitu BCDEDIT.


BCDEDIT merupakan command-line tool yang dapat digunakan untuk melakukan konfigurasi boot manager yang ada pada Windows Vista dan Windows 7. Boot manager ini adalah yang nampak dalam layar berupa pilihan sistem operasi dan bagaimana masing-masing sistem operasi ini akan booting, dan ini seperti halnya boot loader GRUB atau LILO yang ada pada sistem operasi Linux.

BCDEDIT yang akan digunakan untuk mengatur boot configuration data (BCD) pada Windows Boot Manager dijalankan melalui Command Prompt sebagai Administrator. Caranya, buka Start – All Programs – Accessories kemudian klik kanan pada Command Prompt dan pilih Run As Administrator. Pada kotak dialog konfirmasi yang muncul, pilih Yes.

Dengan mengetikkan bcdedit melalui Command Prompt tersebut kemudian [Enter], akan ditampilkan isi BCD saat ini. Hasilnya akan nampak seperti ini:

Di situ ditampilkan boot masing-masing boot entry dengan masing-masing parameternya, antara lain:

Merupakan nama sistem yang diberikan untuk suatu boot entry yang penulisannya diapit {}. Dapat dilihat, untuk Windows Boot manager mempunyai identifier {bootmgr}, {current} untuk Windows 7, dan {ntldr} untuk Windows XP. Nantinya ini akan digunakan dalam mengubahi parameter boot entry-nya.
* device

Merupakan drive, partisi, atau virtual image yang akan digunakan untuk membooting suatu boot entry.
* path

Merupakan lokasi pada device dimana terdapat file boot loader.
* description

Merupakan keterangan suatu boot entry, dan ini yang akan ditampilkan sebagai nama dalam daftar pilihan sisitem operasi pada boot manager ketika booting.

Untuk berjaga-jaga, sebelum melakukan perubahan sebaiknya melakukan backup atas BCD yang ada saat ini dengan melakukan ekspor ke suatu file, caranya jalankan perintah berikut:

bcdedit /export C:\BCDku

Dengan perintah tersebut BCD akan disimpan dalam file bernama BCDku di drive C. Jika misalnya nantinya terjadi sesuatu pada saat atau setelah perubahan dan ingin kembali menggunakan BCD tersebut makan dapat dilakukan impor BCD dengan perintah sebagai berikut:

bcdedit /import C:\BCDku

Setelah mengetahui bagaimana melakukan ekspor dan impor BCD, selanjutnya kita mencoba melakukan beberapa perubahan sederhana dengan mengetikkan perintah-perintah berikut:

bcdedit /set {ntldr} description "Windows XP Proffesional"

Perintah di atas digunakan untuk mengubah deskripsi untuk boot entry {ntldr} (Windows XP) dari sebelumnya yang tertulis “Earlier version of Windows” menjadi “Windows XP Proffesional” misalnya. Anda dapat menggunakan deskripsi lain yang Anda inginkan yang akan tampil pada daftar pilihan OS.

bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addfirst

Perintah di atas digunakan untuk menampilkan pilihan {ntldr} / Windows XP pada urutan pertama pada daftar menu OS.

bcdedit /displayorder {current} /addlast

Perintah di atas digunakan untuk menampilkan pilihan {current} / Windows 7 pada urutan terakhir pada daftar menu OS. Jika hanya ada dua, ini alternatif perintah sebelumnya.

bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} {current}

Alternatif lainnya untuk mengatur urutan daftar OS pada menu, yang disebutkan lebih dahulu akan berada pada urutan lebih atas.

bcdedit /default {ntldr}

Perintah di atas digunakan untuk mengubah default OS yang akan dijalankan jika tidak memilih setelah waktu timeout-nya, menjadi {ntldr} / Windows XP.

bcdedit /timeout 10

Perintah tersebut digunakan untuk mengubah timeout menjadi 10 detik. Jika dalam waktu ini tidak ada aktivitas memilih maka default OS yang akan dijalankan.

Perintah-perintah di atas merupakan sebagian kecil dari apa yang dapat dilakukan dengan bcdedit. Yang lain misalnya untuk menambah boot entry ke OS lain, menghapus boot entry, dan lainnya. Untuk bantuan dan daftar parameter untuk BCDEDIT dapat dibaca dengan mengetikkan

bcdedit /?

Dan untuk membaca panduan parameter-parameter yang ada misalnya displayorder, dapat dilakukan dengan perintah

bcdedit /displayorder /?

Intinya tinggal ketika /? dibelakangnya.

Dari sedikit contoh perintah menggunakan BCDEDIT di atas, setidaknya Anda dapat melakukan perubahan seperti yang sudah saya lakukan, yaitu mengubah deskripsi, mengubah urutan daftar menu, mengubah default OS yang dijalankan menjadi Windows XP, dan mengubah timeout dari 30 detik menjadi 10 detik.

Sekarang buka channel palette.. Tekan ctrl klik di Channel RGB dan buat channel baru dengan nama Alpha 1. Set background color dan foreground color jadi putih dan hitam .. atau tekan tombol D.

Tekan ctrl + DELETE sebanyak 3 - 4 kali di channel alpha tadi.. hasilnya harus begini ya..

Tekan CTRL + D untuk menghilangkan seleksi, Perbesar gambar menggunakan Move Tool..

Hapus sebagian gambar yang gak mau ditampilin..

kalo udah sekarang tekan CTRL + I untuk invert gambar

Sekarang klik lagi RGB channel nya.. lalu pindah ke Layer palette lagi.. Buat 2 buah layer.. Layer 1 kasih warna putih dengan menekan tombol CTRL + backspace.

layer 2 biarin aja transparan. Liat aja gambar di bawah :

di layer 2 klik Select > Load Selection , rubah channel nya ke Alpha 1. lalu klik Ok

Ubah background color ke warna biru tua atau warna apa aja terserah aja ..

Tekan CTRL + Delete

Klik Lock transparancy supaya background gak kewarnain kalo kita mau ubah warna.

Sekarang klik gradient Tool dan ubah setingannya: gradient type Noise.. klik Randomize untuk ngerubah warna2 nya.

Drag dari atas ke bawah atau bawah ke atas,… terserah aja enaknya yang mana
